SERIOUSLY!?!; Boy, 9, suspended from school for sexual harassment after calling teacher 'cute'

In one North Carolina school, a student got more than just detention for having a schoolboy crush.
Nine year old Emanyea Lockett was suspended from school for two days when he told a friend that he thought his teacher was 'cute'.
'I was talking to my friend and I said Miss Taylor was cute,' Emanyea told local WSOC news.
'That's all I said,' Emanyea continued. 
A substitute teacher at Brookside Elementary School overheard the remark, told the principal, and then the principal suspended the boy for two days.
Emanyea's mother thinks that his punishment is far more severe than the crime.

'It's not like he went up to the woman and tried to grab her in a sexual way,' mother Chiquita Lockett said. 
'Why would he be suspended for two days?' she continued.

One local broadcast pointed out the irony that the fourth grader was being accused of sexual harassment, even though he does not know what the term means.

A school representative for the district, located just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, said that the details of the suspension were not available. 
She did tell local reporters that the incident related to 'inappropriate behavior after making inappropriate statements.

Cikgu gone fishing!!!

A team from the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) made a spot check on a school in Pulau Banggi, an island north of Kudat, and guess what they found out.

Only one teacher was in the school which had 60 pupils. The headmaster and another teacher were said to be in Kudat attending meeting. One of the four classrooms were empty, and some pupils were playing outside. There were pupils in two classroom but no sign of their teachers.

And Suhakam found out that the rest of the teachers had gone fishing!!!

This was among the complaints received by Suhakam Sabah Office in the Commission's Annual Report 2007 released by the commission's vice chairman Tan Sri Simon Sipaun.

Sound like `an old and evergreen story' of teachers posted to islands and remote areas in Sabah.

Gender segregation of students

The Daily Express today reported that a wife of a Minister from Unmo who is the Principal of SMK Tansau Penampang in Sabah had segregated students in her school eventhough it is a co educational school. Following complaints State Education director Normah Gagoh had written to the principal to stop it and return to normal in tandem with the National Educational Policy,

My Say:

The actions by the head of school was openly defying the directive of Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein that such move was not allowed. He had issued the directive when a school in Peninsula Malaysia did the same.

The Crosses Stay Put

On Monday (Dec 3) Federal Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar said it was a tradition for Mission Schools to have Crosses erected in schools' compound and they was no reason to remove them.

This assurances was made by the Deputy Minister in the wake of calls by Government Members of Parliament Syed Hood Syed Edrus (Parit Sulong) and Datuk Mohamed Aziz (Sri Gading) in Parliament to remove the Crosses and Virgin Mary statues.

Syed Hood said he was disappointed that the statue of Virgin Mary was displayed in front of convents schools and questioned why the Education Ministry allowed it as Malaysia is an Islamic nation.

Mohamed in support of Syed Hood said a Muslim father complained that these schools remained open when Hari Raya Aidilfitri was celebrated.

Opposition leader in Parliament Lim Kit Siang also said that there was growing intolerance and increasing extremism in Malaysia and the latest being the demand for the removal of crosses and demolition of Christian statues in Mission schools.

Noh Omar told Parliament in his answer to Kit Siang said: "We will continue with the current practice, which is a tradition started long time ago."

In Sabah, the Sabah Counsel of Churches chairman Bishop Datuk Voo Thien Fui welcomed the firm assurance by the Education Ministry that crucifixes placed in Christian Mission schools which have been part and parcel of the identity of such schools since time immemorial will not be removed.

The Bishop said the Council was very happy with the decision and thank the Government for understanding the sensitivities of Christians.

Former principal of Kota Kinabalu La Salle Secondary School, Brother Datuk Charles O'Leary expressed happiness that the statement by the two MPs had been corrected by higher authorities.

He said actions would be taken to dispel the anxieties and criticisms of the Christian communities throughout the nation.

Bro Charles said having crosses in Christian missionary schools is a long tradition going back to a couple of hundred years.

"Since Malaysia's independence, Christian schools have played an important part in the development of the country and in the promotion of education," he said.

"We opened our doors to Muslim students and there was never any attempt at making Muslim students Christians," Bro Charles added,

Bro Charles also recalled a statement by ex-Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that his father attended school in St Xavier's Penang and even studied the Holy Scriptures.

Principal of the St Francis Convent Secondary School, Kota Kinabalu, Pang Shat Mui said the population of the school (Form One - Form Five) is 843 of which 300 are Muslims.

This school started as a primary school in 1923.

During my tour of duty in Europe, I was based in London and stayed at 31 Chapel Side, Moscow Road, London W2 4LL. A portion of the house is sharing a common wall with a Catholic church, hence the name Chapel Side. My office cum house was on the second floor and a floor above me was a Muslim family - Sdr Karim Sulaiman and wife Siti Hawa and their children.

Calling all SASS ex-students

Sabah Adventist Secondary School, Tamparuli established in 1939 is facing the prospect of being closed down due to financial problems. One of the oldest missions school in Sabah, it is totally dependent on external funding.

The school, which commands a good view of Mount Kinabalu, is one of the two managed by the Sabah Adventist (SDA) Mission, the other being Goshen Adventist Secondary School in Kota Marudu.

The financial problem SASS is facing is due to rising maintenance costs, dwindling enrollment of students and unpaid schools fees.

Its principal Minson Gulungan said students would move to other schools after passing their Form Three and Form Five examinations.

To ease the financial burden of the school and to ensure its continued survival, the school management's had launched a special fund. Called Danasiswa SASS, it was launched by ex-student Datuk Johnston Bangkuai who is also president of the Sabah Journalist Association.

The school, founded by an Indonesian, Pastor D P Siagian, has produced many students who have now become successful professionals, businessmen and politicians.

With the launching of Danasiswa SASS, it is hope that former students who are well off in the chosen career will generously contribute to the fund.

My Say:

It will ha a shame if the school,located just across the Tuaran River from Tamparuli township, is closed down after valiant efforts from every quarters to keep it going.
